MAGONISTA: 36x48 mixed media on canvas. Ricardo Flores Magon was an anarchist from Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th century.  He and his brother (also pictured) led the Magonistas and were influential in the social movement that led to the Mexican Revolution.  Magon was greatly influenced by Peter Kropotkin and Kropotkin’s book “The conquest of bread”. Magon died in prison in Kansas.  “Sic Labitur Aetas” is Latin for “Thus passes a lifetime” with the continued use of hermetic symbols and the Fibonacci equation.  Awakening a fallen revolutionary.

EL CORDOBEZ: 36x36 mixed media on canvas. El Cordobez was one of the most popular and successful matadors to this date, a legendary figure, born Manuel Benitez Perez into poverty and following a life of crime, at a bullfight one day in the audience with his sister El Cordobez looked to her and said “Don’t cry, Angelita. Tonight Ill buy you a house, or Ill dress you in mourning” he jumped into the ring and fought the brave bulls of Spain, and thus started the legend of Manuel Benitez from Cordoba with his daring, theatrics, and acrobatic style.  All these is juxtaposed with the realities of death and the carcass of those “brave bulls” There is a beauty to bullfighting, the bull and fighter locked in a timeless death dance where beauty is paramount.  The Romance is harshly faced with the real death without beauty.

Is a re visitation of mystical religions, wayward prophets, and end of worlds.  In this year of 2012 many people think the end of the world is approaching and are finding religion or what would be considered comfort in these end days.  As their population was decimated, their lands seized, and their way of life destroyed, Native American followed Wovoka and the Ghost Dance Movement.  This piece contains Wovoka founder of the Ghost Dance 1890 religion, Crazy Horse one of the last heroes of the native peoples, Aleister Crowley another prophet and founder of Thelema a hermetic religion.  The piece itself is thick with many layers also alluding to all the layers of meaning within this piece and hermetic symbols throughout, just another piece of a whole which when combined signals the raising of the demon. Mystic expressionism for 2012 age.  In the face of destruction all acts to slow or prevent are futile and the end comes to all things.

The title of this piece is a nod to The Mountain Goats, with several songs about a couple and their tumultuous relationship.  This piece is a complicated and tumultuous relationship; Sitting Bull a scion of the Sioux Nation whose vision led a combined native American force against Col. Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn, with other notable Native Chiefs as Crazy horse and Gall leading the forces. The other character is that of Buffalo Bill, a later chapter in the life of Sitting Bull was as a “show Indian” in the Wild West Show a hero degraded. Buffalo Bill & Col. Custer represent the same entity, the Adversary and Sitting Bull the opposite. Two halves of a whole in constant and violent conflict forever intertwined.  US forces fearing he would join and strengthen the Ghost Dance Movement killed Sitting Bull. Thus is the Alpha Couple.
